Understanding Varanasi's Unique Geography
Varanasi sits on the western bank of the Ganga, at a point where the river takes a dramatic crescent-shaped turn flowing northward — making it one of the few places where the Ganga flows from south to north.

The 84 ghats follow this crescent curve, stretching about 7 km along the riverbank. This unique orientation means the ghats face east — perfect for catching the sunrise.
The Old City
Behind the ghats lies the densely packed old city with its famous narrow lanes. The city gradually expands westward into more modern neighborhoods.
Key Landmarks
Kashi Vishwanath Temple sits at the heart of the old city. BHU campus marks the southern boundary. Varanasi Junction (railway station) is about 2 km west of the ghats.
Getting Around
Walking is the best way to explore the ghats and old city. For longer distances, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are abundant. The city also has a growing network of shared autos on fixed routes.
